In short

A dry verge system replaces the crumbling mortar along your gable ends with interlocking units that clip over the end tiles and are screwed to the battens. DG Roofing Services fits Manthorpe dry verge only, usually to your existing roof without re-roofing, across Darlington, Teesside and County Durham.

Dry Verge System in Darlington & the North East

The verge is the sloping edge of your roof at the gable end. On most older houses the tiles along this edge are held in place by a strip of sand and cement mortar — and that mortar is one of the first parts of a roof to fail. If you've found chunks of mortar on the drive or in the garden, or can see gaps under the end tiles, your verge is breaking down.

A dry verge system replaces that mortar with interlocking units that clip over the end of each row of tiles and are mechanically fixed to the battens. No mortar to crack, no repointing every few years, and the tiles are held firmly in high winds.

Dry verge is one of the jobs we do most. We only fit Manthorpe — the leading UK brand — because cheap, unbranded verge caps can turn brittle in the sun and come loose in storms.

Signs Your Verge Needs Doing

Is Your Gable End Mortar Failing?

Verge mortar takes the full force of wind-driven rain. Once it cracks, water and frost do the rest. Look out for these signs from the ground — then call or WhatsApp Daz a photo.

  • Lumps of mortar on the ground below the gable
  • Cracks or gaps under the end tiles
  • Loose or rocking tiles along the roof edge
  • Birds or wasps getting in at the gable end

Excellent roofer highly recommended

“We had water getting into our extension and noticed our ridge tiles were loose too. D G Roofing came out, knew exactly what the problem was straight away, and gave us a really reasonable quote. They were back just a couple of days later to get started, and even fixed a couple of small things they spotted along the way — all within the original price. Absolutely delighted with the work; I'd have no hesitation in recommending them!”

“Very pleased by the work completed, which was replacement ridge tiles using a dry ridge system and sorting out an issue with water drainage into the gutters. We were kept up to date on the job timing beforehand. The DG team was great to deal with. The job was completed promptly within 3 working days. The DG team made sure that the site was left clean and tidy. The price for the job was very competitive. I wouldn't hesitate to use DG Roofing services again if I have any more issue with my roof.”

Repair Leak in Pitched Roof

“The lads rang up this morning, asked for some photos and diagnosed the problem straight away. Came out the same day, completed the job in no time at all. Both a friendly bunch of lads, showed photos of before and after the work (too high up to see myself) and went through everything in detail. They offered various solutions and gave a great price. I’d absolutely recommend 10/10!”

Questions

Frequently Asked

Can't see your question? Call Daz — he's happy to give honest advice, even if you're not ready for a quote.

What is a dry verge system?

A dry verge system is a set of interlocking units that cap the ends of the tiles along your gable edge. They clip together and are screwed to the battens, replacing the sand and cement mortar traditionally used on verges.

Can you fit dry verge without re-roofing?

Yes. In most cases we remove the old mortar and fit dry verge to your existing roof, as long as the tiles and battens are sound. It's usually a quick job with scaffold or a tower for access.

Why do some dry verge caps blow off?

Cheap, unbranded verge caps can become brittle in UV light, and poorly fitted units aren't fixed securely to the battens. That's why we only fit Manthorpe and fix every unit properly.

Is dry verge a legal requirement?

Since the 2014 revision of BS 5534, verges on new roofs and re-roofs must be mechanically fixed. Existing roofs don't have to be upgraded — but if your verge mortar is failing, dry verge is the long-term fix.

Should I do dry ridge at the same time?

Often, yes. The ridge and verge are both usually bedded in the same ageing mortar, and doing both together means one set of access. See our combined dry ridge & dry verge service.
